In 2022, the panel capacity of the eighth generation will increase by 29%

The COVID-19 pandemic has ignited a market opportunity for the curtilage economy as it ravages the world, according to Omdia’s latest report. Thanks to the new lifestyle of working from home and studying from home, the demand for laptops has grown significantly since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2019. For panel manufacturers, there are also plans to ramp up notebook production from 2020 to meet the projected monthly increase in demand from PC brand customers.

In 2021, under the influence of LG Display of South Korea to increase the production capacity of notebook computer panel, and HKC Display of China to start mass production of notebook computer panel, the notebook panel production will grow the most in the 8th generation line, and will reach the scale of 200,000 pieces per month by the end of 2021. As HKC Display continues to actively expand the monthly production capacity of line 8 and manufacturers in Taiwan also plan to introduce notebook PC panels into line 8, it is predicted that in 2022 notebook PC panel production capacity will continue to grow by 29% YoY in line 8, ranking first in the capacity growth rate of notebook computers of all generations.

Driven by AUO and TCL, the production capacity of notebook PC panel based on LTPS based on the 6 generation line is expected to continue to grow by 15% YoY in 2021. In contrast, due to the small production scale of the 5th generation line, there is no continuous expansion of notebook PC panel production, Only Samsung Display will actively develop its 5.5-generation OLED notebook next year.

The chief analyst at Omdia, Lin Xiaoru said panel manufacturers’ plans to expand notebook PC production, after a year and a half of high demand in the PC terminal market, the demand for 11.6-inch panels, led by Chromebooks, began to fall in the middle of this year, which seems to have tipped the wind for a subsequent shift in market of supply and demand. In the overall PC industry, the choke point of material shortage is concentrated in the downstream OEM end, rather than the panel end. Meanwhile, panel manufacturers continue to actively expand the production capacity of notebook computers, which means that the terminal demand for notebook computer panel in 2022 will test the supply and demand of PC panel in the future.
