Supply is still tight, the shortage of laptop may be extended to Q3

The epidemic has created a demand for long-distance work and online learning, leading to a surge in the demand for laptops. However, under the influence of the lack of materials, the laptop supply continues to be tight. At present, the shortage of material has not eased, such as panel drive IC and power management chip has been tight for a long time, Q2 has not seen a slowdown in this year, and even Q3 shortage will be more serious.

A few days ago, Asustek Co. CEO Hu Shubin pointed out in the Road Show that because the related IC produced by the 8-inch fab is tight, For example, logic IC and peripheral I/O control IC appear out of stock signal, if laptop, board card and other products are affected and there is no big improvement compared with the fourth quarter of last year, the gap will be around 25 to 30 percent.

Acer chairman Chen Junsheng also disclosed a few days ago, upstream supply chain shortages continue to increase, and the second quarter will be more difficult. Currently, only CPU supply is relatively stable, but other IC components, DRAM and SSD components that are used in 8-inch wafers will still face price increases due to shortages.

The panel drive IC and power management chips associated with 8-inch wafers have been tight for a long time and have not improved, but there are no further shortages, the company said. Instead, Audio ICs, peripheral I/O and control ICs are new players on the list, and it looks like Q3 will be even tighter. As for the market’s concern about Double booking, the legal person quoted Asustek as saying that due to the continuous shortage of the upstream supply chain, there is no Double booking problem due to the limited supply of components.
